1. I’ve Been Workin’ on the Railroad – This American folksong song harkens back to the foundations of this country, referencing the back-breaking work of the African-Americans and immigrants who built our vast network of railroads. The tune can also be found in a popular nursery rhyme in Japan with different title and lyrics, a version which focuses on the happiness of the journey.
2. Shortnin’ Bread- One reference lists "shortening bread" as a fried batter bread made of corn meal, flour, hot water, eggs, baking powder, milk and shortening. Another give the following ingredients: 1/2 cup butter (softened), 1/4 cup brown sugar and 1 cup flour (added a little at a time).
3. You Are My Sunshine: Country and gospel music singer Jimmie Davis, also known for being the 47th governor of Louisiana, made this song so popular it was declared one of Louisana’s state songs. This catchy upbeat tune has a long history of use throughout modern culture.
4.  On Top of Old Smokey: A popular 1963 parody of this song is titled "On Top of Spaghetti" and was originally recorded and performed by folk singer Tom Glazer. It follows the path of a meatball when someone sneezed.

1. Start with a really good hiding place and make sure to remember where that is once the prize is hidden.

2. Create your treasure hunt with anything BUT edible items. Those little bags of gold foil wrapped chocolate candies are cute but you don’t want to hide food where it may never be found or where a pet can get it first!

3. Work your way backward, deciding how many clues and obstacles you want to create and how complex a clue your children or friends can handle. This should be fun not frustrating!

4. Hide the clues carefully around the house with numbers on them so you don’t forget the order you went it. And, of course, keep a copy of the clues you create so you can answer any questions as the search continues. Some clues are sure to stump someone.

The Farmer & the Dell: First recorded in Germany in 1826, this little song is actually a game in which children stand in a circle.  In the middle stands a “farmer” who picks a wife, a child, a nurse, a cat, a rat, and the cheese who then leave the circle in order except for the one designated as cheese, who is left standing alone in the circle at the end.
2. Itsy Bitsy Spider (or Eensy Weensy Spider): Hand motions make this song fun for everyone. Kids love to wiggle their fingers as they try imitate the movement of their teacher or parent who connect thumb to middle finger on alternating hands to watch the “spider” crawl up the wall. Fingers wiggle to show the washing away of the little spider. Hands rise to show the sun coming up and the spider starts crawling again.
3. Kookaburra: Ever wonder what a Kookaburra is? This bird from the kingfisher family is native to Australia and New Guinea. It has a loud call that sounds uncannily like a human’s, good-natured but somewhat hysterical!
4. Home on the Range: This song was officially adopted by Kansas as their state song on June 30, 1947 and is often thought of as the unofficial song of the American West. This tune is based on a poem written by Kansas native Dr. Brewster M. Higley called “My Western Home.”

With these paper costumes for kids based on the characters of the best-selling book The Costume Trunk from Paddywhack Lane, children can play dress-up every day this fall.

-Cardstock paper

Instructions: Download the various costume designs from our website www.paddywhacklane.com, including a Princess Crown and Wand, Bumble Bee wings, and a Pirate’s Hat.

Print out the designs on your cardstock paper. Lay out newspaper on your kitchen or dining room table to help keep messes to a minimum. Using all of your markers, crayons, and glitter, have your child personalize each costume piece.

When finished and dry, follow the instructions on each design to create the finished look.
